Targeting teaches your dog to touch an object with a part of his body. The most common body parts dog might use for targeting are nose and paws. Teaching your dog a platform teaches your dog to touch an object with his paws.

In this webinar Beth will show you how she teaches a platform touch with the dog’s paws or body using different types of ‘platforms”.  It is the fundamental exercise she teaches all of her own dogs, because it is then easy to teach them to use other parts of their body for different obedience exercises.

A few uses for platform training:

  • Confidence: for objects and people. Once your dog enjoys climbing on a pallet, grooming tables and Veterinary tables are fun and easy.
  • Grooming tasks: brushing, trimming nails, brushing teeth, and more.
  • Positioning:  for teaching a blind search, jump or A frame
  • Fronts: Beth’s dogs learn that reinforcement comes when they touch their chin to my belly.  It makes for a very close recall.
  • Finishes: Teaching head position in the Basic Position and learning how to maintain heel position.
  • Other behaviors: teaching a dog to hold a dumbbell close in front to handler, fun tricks like “high 5”, “shake a paw” and “roll over.” Beth has even used this behavior to teach her dogs to go to a mark on a television and/or movie set and do a desired behavior.

Adding the Stay Command:

Once the dog is taught to touch a part of his body to a specific spot or object, it is time to strengthen the skill by adding time duration and distraction; thereby instilling a strong stay command with your dog.

This webinar is presented by Beth Bradley, Animal Behaviorist & International Schutzhund Trainer

Beth began studying animal behavior and dog training at 12 years of age because of a very aggressive American Eskimo dog her parents purchased for her. She became a New Jersey State Animal Control Officer in 1986 and graduated Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Criminal Justice. Throughout school, she worked and studied under many well-renowned animal behaviorists and trainers. In 1989, Beth formed her own company and has made dog training her full-time career since 1995.

Not only does Beth offer group and private instruction, she volunteers at many shelters helping dogs that are in need of a little training in order to find a forever home.

She has trained her own dogs and client’s dogs for television and movie roles.

Beth competes with her dogs, in order to separate herself from other dog trainers and puts her skills to the test of knowledgeable judges and expert trainers. She has trained and titled dogs from an AKC Companion Dog to a Utility Dog Excellent title as well putting many Schutzhund titles on her own dogs.

She has represented the United States in the World Trials in 2003, 2009, 2015 and 2016. Her recent competition dog, Fyte, earned a spot on the United States Schutzhund WUSV Team 2015 & 2016.  He was the youngest dog ever to become a part of this prestigious team and the youngest dog ever from the United States to compete on foreign soil (Finland & Germany).
