Things to Know Before You Come

Please read some of our FAQs and our cancellation policy below.

Everyone who owns a dog has probably heard of kennel cough… but what exactly is it?

Kennel cough is a highly contagious illness that is similar to the common cold in humans. It’s spread through airborne droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces such as a shared water bowl. If dogs are in close quarters, it can spread very quickly. The most common symptom is a dry and persistent cough that typically resolves in about 10 days.

Although the word “kennel” is part of the name, your dog can become exposed from any place frequented by other dogs, such as a dog park, groomer, training facility, pet stores, etc. Basically, anytime your dog comes in contact with another dog.

Once infected, your dog may not show symptoms anywhere from 2-14 days. That’s what makes it so hard to contain. Owners typically don’t even know their dog is infected or contagious.

Bordatella is a vaccine that protects your dog against getting kennel cough. However, just like the human flu, different strains of Bordatella arise every year. The Bordatella vaccine often does NOT protect vaccinated dogs against these variant strains.
As you can see, this is a tricky little bacteria!

Now you can see why kennels, including ours, occasionally must deal with kennel cough. Once it’s in the building we take every precaution to prevent further spread. If your dog is showing symptoms, we will contact you immediately. With your consent we will take them to your regular vet or our vet. We inform all owners of dogs currently boarding with us and those scheduled to come in within a few days.

Due to the high transmissibility of kennel cough, the lengths we must take to get everything under control, and most importantly for the comfort of all dogs in our care, we kindly ask you to inform us if you believe your dog has come in contact with kennel cough or is showing symptoms prior to your appointment.
Kennel cough is very similar to a common cold. The majority of dogs will recover on their own. If you have any concerns for your dog, we advise you to contact your veterinarian.

All dogs must be in good health. Owners will certify their dog(s) are in good health and have not been ill with a communicable condition in the last 30 days. Upon admission, all dogs must be free from any condition which could potentially jeopardize other pets. Dogs that have been ill with a communicable condition in the last 30 days will require veterinarian certification of health to be admitted or readmitted. Dogs must be on an effective flea control program. If fleas are found at check-in, a mandatory flea bath will be given at the owner’s expense and the owner will be notified.

Your pet is under constant supervision by experienced personnel. If a medical issue arises while your dog is in our care, we will take the following steps:

  1. We will contact the owner immediately.
  2. If the owner or emergency contact person is unavailable, Petra’s Dog Resource Center will call a veterinarian for immediate treatment.
  3. All incurred vet fees are the responsibility of the owner.

Our staff keeps current on pet first aid with the American Red Cross and will be able to assess the situation and administer first aid as needed. We will make every attempt to contact you with all available contact numbers,  and if we are unable to reach you, we will contact the emergency contact number listed in your file. If the situation is an emergency, we will immediately go to a veterinarian for the health and safety of your dog.

ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION:  It is the owner’s responsibility to make sure that all contact information is current and accurate. In addition, all males over a year old must be neutered. We will consider accepting senior in-tact males on a case by case basis.

If your schedule changes and necessitates rescheduling a boarding reservation, we ask that you kindly give us at least 24 hours’ notice.  Failure to give 24 hours’ notice will result in a “cancellation charge” equal to one night’s stay.

In the event that you return home early, you will be charged full cost for scheduled boarding within 24 hours of your unscheduled early return. Any remaining balance for early return cancellations will be credited to your account for future boarding needs.
